Ruin-ation

Ruin-ation

Introduction:

Let's start by just going over the flow of constructing an army. In my own personal view of Warhammer in general for both Sigmar and 40k - if I like the look of the models then I'll go for it.

Others are different, you have the meta after every major update to the game. An example would be the Vanguard Space Marines on release. Whereas you also get the players who want to know how they can structure their armies and build a list first and work through it.

The last one in particular, will be the most benefitting to what we're going to discuss today and that is, terrain!

The newest addition will present terrain points to players. Dependant on the size of game, you can bring from between 100-400pts. This ultimately gives the size of your game, the right amount of scenery to balance it out.

The details:

Now, this doesn't mean to say all of the games you'll have in the future can't have more or less terrain for fun. My friend Graeme and I consistently have games that have loads of scenery because we feel it brings more strategic gameplay but also what actual 40k would be like - in regard to ruined cities, broken fortresses and having two armies collide in the wreckage etc.

The new system from the Tactical Deployment book works exactly like how your army does. Every piece of terrain you want on that board, costs points on your side. They are treated separately to your army though, so you don't have to sacrifice models for terrain.

Here's an example:

From this; we can see a few things quite clearly:
- Points Value (and for a sizable ruined building, it's not that much from my perspective)
- It has a specific "entry point" in it. Something that hasn't ever really been covered by Warhammer in general before.

These types of terrain also have their own stat sheet! Which does mean, more things to remember... however it also provides a buff to the player using it!

From the above, we can see the traits it has - to act in accordance with the newest terrain rules of the 9th edition. But also a passive benefit to any unit that has grenades equipped inside the area. By all means, if you enjoy throwing multiple grenades rather than just the one in a shooting phase - I think you now know the terrain piece you should be getting!

Alas, we're not quite at the stages of using the dead in the field as cover yet... I'm sure I can hear a whimpered cry of a Guardsman somewhere. But it's a step in the right direction to bring an interesting plot twist to even the smallest of 40k games.

What do you think of the new terrain rules? Would there be anything you'd add to it? Which armies will take more advantage of it? We'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
